How discount and sale price work

A discount is a percent taken off the original (regular) price. Amount saved = original × (discount ÷ 100). Sale price = original − amount saved.

Example: 25% off $80 → save $20 → you pay $60.

If you already know the sale tag price, switch to Find discount % and enter original plus sale price to see what percent off that is.

For general percent math (tax, tips, test scores), use the percentage calculator.

Frequently asked questions about the discount calculator

  • How do I calculate sale price after a discount?

Multiply the original price by the discount percent divided by 100 to get the savings. Subtract that from the original. Example: 20% off $50 → save $10 → pay $40.

  • How do I find the discount percent from two prices?

Subtract sale price from original to get amount saved. Divide by the original and multiply by 100. Example: $80 down to $60 → save $20 → (20 ÷ 80) × 100 = 25% off.

  • Is the discount taken before or after tax?

Stores usually apply percent off the pretax price, then add sales tax on the discounted amount. This tool does not include tax—only the price discount.

  • What if there are two discounts (e.g. 20% off plus extra 10%)?

They rarely add straight (20 + 10). The second percent usually applies to the already-reduced price. Run each step separately or check the store’s terms.

  • Can I use this for coupon codes?

Yes, if the coupon is a straight percent off or a fixed sale price. Enter the original shelf price and your discount or final price.

  • Is this discount calculator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no signup.
