Road signs, fitness apps, and car dashboards often mix kilometers (km) and miles (mi). If you travel, run, or read international news, you need a reliable way to switch between them. This guide gives you the exact formula, quick estimates, a reference chart, and a link to our kilometers to miles converter.
The exact conversion factor
One mile is defined as exactly 1.609344 kilometers (international mile).
So:
Miles = kilometers ÷ 1.609344
Kilometers = miles × 1.609344
For everyday use, 1.609 or 1.6 is close enough for mental math.
Example: 10 km to miles
10 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 6.21 miles
Example: 5 miles to km
5 × 1.609344 ≈ 8.05 km

Quick mental math tricks
Km → miles (divide by 1.6)
- 10 km ≈ 10 ÷ 1.6 ≈ 6.25 mi (actual ~6.21)
- 100 km ≈ 62 mi (actual ~62.14)
- 5 km (common run) ≈ 3.1 mi
Rule of thumb: multiply km by 0.62 to get miles.
- 50 km × 0.62 ≈ 31 mi
Miles → km (multiply by 1.6)
- 26.2 mi (marathon) × 1.609 ≈ 42.2 km
- 60 mph speed limit context is miles per hour; distance still uses the same length conversion.
Why the factor is not exactly 1.6
Using 1.6 is easy but introduces a small error:
| Distance | Using ÷1.6 | Exact ÷1.609344 |
|---|---|---|
| 10 km | 6.25 mi | 6.21 mi |
| 100 km | 62.5 mi | 62.14 mi |
| 1000 km | 625 mi | 621.37 mi |

When you need km ↔ miles
- Driving abroad — Speed limits in km/h vs mph; odometer in km vs miles.
- Running and cycling — Race distances and training plans.
- Aviation and shipping — Nautical miles are different; road miles use the factor above.
- Reading maps and GPS — Toggle units in Google Maps or your device settings, or convert manually.
km/h vs miles per hour
Speed conversions use the same length factor:
1 km/h = 0.621371 mph
1 mph = 1.609344 km/h
Example: 100 km/h ≈ 62.1 mph (common highway speed in metric countries).
How to convert step by step
- Write down the distance in km.
- Divide by 1.609344 (or multiply by 0.621371).
- Round to the precision you need (two decimals is enough for travel).
Example: Your odometer shows 250 km. How many miles?
250 ÷ 1.609344 ≈ 155.34 miles
Accuracy for fitness trackers
A 5K race is 5 kilometers = about 3.107 miles, not 3.0 miles. If your watch is set to the wrong units, pace and distance goals will look “off.” Set the device to your preferred unit or convert with the formula above.
